Wow. Lisa Singleton-Rickman wrote an excellent article on teen pregnancy in the Shoals area. I hope her articles will serve to open the dialogue between the school board and community with regard to teen sex, birth control, STDs and pregnancy.

The verdict of science is in, and to no one's surprise, teenagers are having sex.
Furthermore, telling them not to have sex has no effect -- again, to no one's surprise.
The surprise is how much disinformation is getting passed around about condoms. Federal laws hold condoms to higher standards, and with a lower failure rate, than the rubber gloves your doctor puts on to examine you.
But instead of actual education, our hormone-addled teenagers are being told "condoms can fail" and they should just refrain from sex.
Would we teach Driver's Ed this way? "Seat belts are not enough protection. The only sure way to stay out of an accident is to stay off the road!"
